Pointe Claire lies in that uninhabited part of the city's West Island. People aren't sure of what the term means and assume it's an independent Island to the west of Montreal. Actually, West Island is actually a whole island. West Island includes the entire part of the island from Lachine up to the west. Amanda Brugel is said to be born on the West island, though the time she spent there was brief. Brugel began her life in Courtice close to Oshawa. Early ambitions were to be an experienced dancer. In the end, however, her growth rate meant that she outgrew her dance partner. In an article published by the Toronto Star, she confessed, "In heels I am 6 foot 1 inch." Once I outgrew my male companions, I stopped. Many ex-dancers switch to acting. For Brugel she was influenced by an instructor of drama in high school. Her teacher urged her to try out for roles in a school production. The teacher advised her to audition for a character in the school's annual production. In the end, she was given the role of Anne of Green Gables. This led to a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theater Program which she graduated with the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2000.In the 20+ years since, Brugel has landed roles in more than 60 productions in both the small and the large screens. Her most notable role attracted media attention after she got the lead role of Rita on the award-winning series, The Handmaid's Tale
